NFL Draft: Chicago native Peter Skoronski’s draft prediction and odds

Northwestern offensive lineman Peter Skoronski warms up before an NCAA college football game, Saturday, Oct. 22, 2022, in College Park, Md. Skoronski was selected to The Associated Press All-America team released Monday, Dec. 12, 2022.

With Northwestern and Maine South’s Peter Skoronski expected to be a first-round NFL selection, we offer our prediction on where he might land in the draft.

At 6 feet 4 and 313 pounds, Skoronski has a tremendous pedigree as he’s the grandson of Bob Skoronski, who played on the Green Bay Packers offensive line for 11 seasons while protecting the legendary quarterback Bart Starr.

The elder Skoronski went on to win five championships, including two Super Bowls. He was also inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame in 1976.

If the Northwestern product can have half the career his grandfather did, he’ll be an asset to whichever team drafts him.

Now, let’s take a look at just where he might land.

Draft analysis for Peter Skoronski

The difficulty here is that nine of the first round’s top 11 selecting teams have a relatively new coach or GM.

Thus, there isn’t a playbook that one can use to determine their possible tendencies or draft philosophies. Before, teams used to be much more willing to discuss the type of players they were targeting on their draft boards.

The betting market tells us that Skoronski (+320) probably isn’t the highest-rated offensive lineman on most draft boards. He likely falls somewhere behind Ohio State’s Paris Johnson Jr. (-430) to be the first offensive lineman selected.

Skoronski’s draft status also depends on whether Arizona will select Johnson with the third overall pick. The Cardinals could easily trade out of the pick and exchange spots with a team looking to move up and grab a quarterback.

If Johnson moves down, his next available landing spot could be at No. 7 with the Raiders. And while that would undoubtedly create an opportunity for the Bears to select Skoronski at No. 9, Tennessee’s Darnell Wright is a name that’s starting to draw a lot of buzz for his play at the right tackle position in the competitive Southeastern Conference.

At the NFL Scouting Combine, Wright produced the second-best athletic grade for an offensive tackle while measuring in at 6-foot-5 with a weight of 333 pounds.

I was slow to come around on Wright, thinking Skoronski would be a natural fit with the Bears as the hometown kid. However, given the recent movement in the betting markets, I have Skoronski falling out of the top 10.

Thus, I’ll look to play his draft position over 10.5 with odds at -136.
