Chicago White Sox snap their 6-game losing streak with a 3-0 victory against the Cleveland Guardians

There are openings in the Chicago White Sox rotation after trading Lucas Giolito and Lance Lynn.

Touki Toussaint stepped in Friday and allowed three hits in five innings to help the Sox to a 3-0 victory against the Cleveland Guardians at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Toussaint struck out four and walked one while earning his first win of the season in his 83-pitch outing.

“I just take it day by day because you just never know,” Toussaint said. “There’s a lot of moving parts right now and I’m just trying to stay one foot in front of the other.

“I thought I threw the ball well. I attacked some hitters. Got behind some guys, got back in counts. Gave up some hits but limited the damage.”

Friday marked Toussaint’s fourth start — and eighth appearance — since the Sox claimed the right-hander off waivers June 20. He has a 3.34 ERA in that span.

Toussaint, Tanner Banks and Gregory Santos combined to hold the Guardians to six hits as the Sox snapped their six-game losing streak.

“That was awesome of him tonight,” third baseman Jake Burger said of Toussaint. “He really had all his pitches working. He was fun to play behind. He’s got that energy and tenacity on the bump to have fun on the infield playing behind him.

“Excited to see him in this role. I’m glad he’s found a home with us. He’s a great teammate.”

Manager Pedro Grifol said Toussaint has been consistent.

“He’s had a few innings where he’s kind of lost it a little bit and then rebounded,” Grifol said. “He’s facing good teams, good lineups. Other than a couple of hiccups in a few innings here and there, he’s been really consistent.

“He’s pounded the strike zone, he looks like a big-leaguer out there, looks like one of the guys that toe the rubber every night. I’m happy he’s here. I’m happy we can take a look at him for two months and possibly build with him.”

Toussaint drew praise from Lynn, who was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers before the game, saying “Touki’s got a lot of promise and he’s going to have the ability to show he can be a starter in this league, and I think he can be. And that’s somebody who wasn’t even in the organization a month ago.”

Toussaint said he would go to Lynn for insight.

“I talked to Lance almost every day, working on new pitches and stuff or asking him, ‘Hey, how can I command my fastball’ and certain things like that,” Toussaint said. “The guy has done it for (12) years, so as much as I can pick his brain and go out there and watch him compete. I appreciate him being here and being my teammate.”

Home runs paved the way for the Sox offensively. Luis Robert Jr. hit a solo shot in the first. He’s second in the American League with 29 home runs.

Burger hit a solo homer in the sixth. It was his third straight game with a home run. He is tied for third in the AL with 25 homers.

“It’s huge,” Burger said of reaching 25 home runs. “It’s (like) what I said when I hit my 20th, it’s a steppingstone to the next goal. Obviously it feels good, but I want to get to the next milestone.”

On a day when three more teammates were traded in Lynn, Joe Kelly and Kendall Graveman, the focus was on the future.

“It’s tough seeing some teammates you’ve had for many years leave and go to a different team,” Burger said. “We love the group we got here and it’s just taking it a day at a time and trying to go out there and leave it all on the field.”
