Local 4-H programs are collecting nonperishable food and other items as part of a statewide food drive being held in conjunction with the Illinois State Fair from Aug. 11 to 13.

Moonlight walk Sunday at Jelke Creek Bird Sanctuary

A free, guided moonlight walk at Dundee Township’s Jelke Creek Bird Sanctuary in unincorporated Sleepy Hollow will be held Sunday, July 30, by the Friends of Dundee Natural Areas and the Fox River Valley Public Library District.

The 8:30 p.m. walk will follow the gravel trails around the ponds and feature stories about the moon, according to a library district Facebook post.

Casting calls for Elgin’s ‘Nightmare’ to be held Aug. 2 and 5

The theater team for Elgin’s annual zombie-themed Halloween season street party, Nightmare on Chicago Street, is looking for actors and street performers to help stage the event.

Auditions will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2 and from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5 at Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley, 56 S. Grove Ave., Elgin, according to the event website. Nightmare on Chicago Street is scheduled to take place in downtown Elgin the night of Saturday, Oct. 21.

Local 4-H seeking donations for statewide food drive

Local 4-H programs are collecting nonperishable food and other items at the DuPage County Fair this weekend as part of a statewide food drive being held in conjunction with the Illinois State Fair from Aug. 11 to 13.

To donate locally, community members can bring food items, cleaning supplies and self-care products to the Kane County University of Illinois Extension Office at 535 S. Randall Road in St. Charles through Aug. 7.

The 4-H Can Make a Difference Drive is also accepting donations Friday through Sunday at the DuPage County Fair, 2015 Manchester Road, Wheaton, and from Aug. 3-6 at the Kendall County Fair, 10826 Illinois Route 71 in Yorkville.

All donations will travel with local 4-H members to the State Fair as part of the statewide initiative. Those with the most pounds of donations will receive funds to support community services efforts in their hometowns.

North Grove redevelopment meeting moved to Aug. 7

The North Grove Redevelopment Area Presentation and Community Meeting that had been scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 1, has been postponed to Monday, Aug. 7, to avoid conflicts with National Night Out activities.

It will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Heritage Ballroom in the The Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way.

The North Grove Redevelopment Area Community Meeting will take place on Monday, August 7, 2023 starting at 5:30 p.m. At this meeting, material will be mounted on boards for review from 5:30-6 p.m., followed by

Lesley Roth, a representative for the urban planning consulting firm Lamar Johnson Collaborative, will give an overview on the redevelopment plan progress followed by a question-and-answer session, a news release said.

Elgin is seeking public input on how the three city-owned sites, all on or near North Grove Street and adjacent to the Fox River, should be redeveloped in advance of a plan being created for the property.

“The project aims to activate the riverfront, provide additional programmatic elements in downtown Elgin, improve quality of life, invigorate the public realm, and create additional opportunities for regional connectivity,” the release said.
