The Dundee Library is hosting a traveling exhibition, “Confronting Violence: Improving Women’s Lives/Enfrentando la violencia, mejorando la vida de las mujeres,” now through Saturday, Sept. 9.

The bilingual display from the National Library of Medicine tells the story of nurses working to reform a medical profession that failed to acknowledge domestic violence as a health issue and not a legal matter, a library news release said.

T-shirts, baseball caps and other items featuring a "bombero" are being sold by Carpentersville Fire Department to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and raise money for local charities.

The Carpentersville Fire Department taking orders now through Sunday, Aug. 13, for bomberos wear apparel in advance of Hispanic Heritage Month, which starts in mid-September.

A wide range of T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts and hats featuring unique designs that celebrate Hispanic culture are available online, according to the village’s electronic newsletter.

Money raised will be donated to local nonprofits. In 2022, more than $4,800 in proceeds were donated to the Boys & Girls Club of Dundee Township and Tri-Cities baseball, officials said.

Dogs welcome at Morning Rotary Club walk, 5K/10K runs

The Morning Rotary Club of Carpentersville’s 3K walk and 5K and 10K runs will start at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, in Raceway Woods at Route 31 and Main Street in Carpentersville.

Dogs are welcome to join participants on the 3K or 5K courses or to run two laps for 10K, a website for the event said. Proceeds will benefit F.I.S.H. Food Pantry and Operation Warm, a drive to purchase new coats for local children in need.

Entry fees are $40 and $50 before Thursday, Aug. 10, with prices increasing after that date. Registration/sign-in will be held 6:30 to 7:45 a.m. Aug. 12, organizers said. Pre-packet pickup and in-person registration takes place from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, at Main Street Bicycles, 39 E. Main St., Carpentersville.

Recycling offered during Downtown Elgin Farmers Market

The Elgin Sustainability Commission is offering a free recycling service through Waste Management’s TerraCycle program every Friday through Oct. 13 at the Downtown Elgin Farmers Market along the Riverside Drive Promenade.

Items that can be dropped off include all brands of reusable plastic and glass food storage containers, oral care products and packaging, shaving supplies, and VTech and LeapFrog electronic learning devices, according to the market’s website.
