Letters to the Editor: Hey, slow down on the Christmas stuff in August

Hey, slow down on the Christmas stuff in August

Have you noticed lately that Christmas items are starting to find a place on store shelves? Did I miss something — like Labor Day, Halloween and Thanksgiving?

If there’s only one saving grace about it, with all of the Canadian smoke in our atmosphere as well as high humidity, the thought of bundling up for the holiday season does have a cooling effect.

But c’mon already, we are now barely into August and many of us haven’t even taken down last year’s Christmas lights.

If the merchants are really that anxious to jump-start the holidays, maybe they can help me retrieve my artificial tree and all the trimmings that now occupy my spooky crawl space.

I get it, many of the stores are still recovering from their losses during the COVID-19 pandemic and getting a leg up on the Christmas season always excites the same people who binge watch Hallmark holiday movies in July.

However, enough is enough. What do you say we call a moratorium on Christmas displays until after Labor Day, when the final grilled weenie has been devoured.

If we must cope with the sight of holiday trinkets while buying the last of our gardening supplies, how about Halloween costumes and masks? They just might come in handy for scaring away carolers in early November.
