Saturday forecast: Air quality alert in effect until Sunday, thunderstorms expected in afternoon, 1 tornado confirmed Friday evening in Wheaton

National Weather Service officials called an air quality alert in effect until Sunday and said a few thunderstorms are possible Saturday afternoon in portions of north central and northeast Illinois, and northwest Indiana.

Weather officials cautioned those in sensitive groups with respiratory and pulmonary conditions to limit prolonged activities outdoors.

At least one tornado was confirmed by radar indicators Friday evening in suburban Wheaton, officials said.

Friday’s storms brought damaging wind gusts to portions of northern Illinois overnight. Officials confirm at least one tornado happened near the Warrenville/Wheaton area based on radar and debris, officials said.

Survey teams are out investigating other reports of damage near Elk Grove Village Friday night.

While tornadoes are not expected Saturday, isolated wind gusts up to 50 mph is a possibility in some areas, mainly in northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana, officials said.

Current conditions at Chicago’s airports is mostly cloudy at 82 degrees. A high of 85 degrees is expected Saturday.

A storm system was moving toward the southeast at 25 mph, officials said.
