Northbrook blotter: Man faces weapons and drug charges after jumping in pond to escape police

The following items were taken Northbrook Police Department reports, press release records. An arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt.

POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE

Christian Alcala, of Chicago, was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance, unlawful use of a weapon by a convicted felon, unlawful transportation of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest, driving while license suspended, speeding, driving with a defective windshield, driving with an illegally tinted driver’s side window, driving with unsafe tires and operation of an uninsured motor vehicle Aug 3. After police clocked Alcala driving 68 mph in a 40-mph zone on Dundee Road near Charlemagne Drive, the vehicle came to a quick stop. Alcala jumped out of the vehicle, ran to a nearby pond and jumped in the water. As officers told Alcala to swim to shore, he said he could not swim. Officers jumped in the water to save him. After Alcala was in custody, police searched the vehicle and found a loaded handgun, cannabis and a white powdery substance which tested positive for cocaine. He was scheduled to appear in Cook County Court Aug. 7 in Skokie.

DUI

Ethan Kang, of Northbrook, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, disobeying a traffic control light, driving with an expired registration and driving with an illegally tinted driver’s side window July 31. Police stopped Kang near the intersection of Lake Cook Road and Skokie Boulevard after he rolled forward into the intersection while the light was red. He failed a field sobriety test. He is scheduled to appear in Cook County Court Aug. 15 in Skokie.

WARRANT APPREHENSION

Edith Williams, of Glenview, was apprehended on a Lake County warrant for theft July 28. Police stopped her near the intersection of Shermer and Willow roads after receiving a report a person who was wanted was driving in the area. She was transported to the Lake County jail.

BURGLARY

A person observed an unknown man inside the person’s vehicle while it was parked in the 900 block of Sunset Ridge Road. The man walked toward another vehicle and attempted to drive away with the person’s wallet. The person ran to the man’s vehicle, opened the car door and attempted to grab the wallet. As the man drove away causing the person to fall, he threw the wallet out the window.

THEFT

Three unknown individuals entered a retail business in the 1400 block of Lake Cook Road, concealed several pieces of clothing in a shopping bag and left the store without paying Aug. 3. One of the individuals reentered the shop, took a shirt and sunglasses and left again without paying the same day.

An unknown individual entered a retail business in the 100 block of Skokie Boulevard, cut the anti-theft sensors off several items and was then confronted by a loss prevention person from the store Aug. 2. The individual threatened the employee and pushed the worker to the ground before leaving the store.

A person shopping at a retail business sin the 800 block of Willow Road was approached by an unknown individual asking questions Aug. 2. After the individual walked away, the person noticed their wallet was missing from their purse.

Two unknown individuals entered a retail business in the 1000 block of Willow Road, took a power tool and left without paying July 31

Two unknown individuals entered a retail business in the 1500 block of Lake Cook Road, took three pairs of sunglasses and left without paying Aug. 1.

An unknown individual stole a cellular telephone from a person’s purse in the 1100 block of Willow Road July 30.

IDENTITY THEFT

A Northbrook resident reported an unknown individual or individuals opened a cellular telephone account in the resident’s name without the resident’s permission Aug. 1.
