More on Super Bowl props

Different prop bets

Player props

Anytime touchdown scorer

Anytime touchdown scorer is one of the more popular player props. This is simply picking a player to score a touchdown at any point during the game.

While this is never guaranteed, certain offensive superstars such as Travis Kelce or Jalen Hurts are never bad bets.

Receiving yards

Markets will set the O/U for receiving yards of certain players in the game. Just like any Super Bowl prop you make, do plenty of research on injuries and other occurrences that may affect the performance of a player.

For example, Kedarius Toney and Mecole Hardman may be banged up from the AFC Championship. This means Travis Kelce might be a good pick to go over his projected receiving yards to pick up production and carry the Chiefs to a win.

Rushing yards

Similarly, rushing yards are a straightforward line on the projected rushing yards a player will have for either side. It’s important to consider how much a team runs the ball or how good the rush defense is of the opposite team.

Receptions

Receptions can be difficult to predict because it’s not always certain who will be defending a player or what defensive schemes they will face. This goes hand in hand with the receiving yards prop bets ― if you know certain players may be hobbled, pick up an offensive player like Travis Kelce or Marquez Valdes-Scantling to pick up production.

First touchdown scorer

This prop bet, while straightforward, is extremely hard to predict. The payout for first touchdown scorer is +700 or higher so it is high risk, high reward.

The best advice when picking this is to pick the best offensive player from your team and hope they get the ball first or that the other team punts or kicks a field goal, followed by your team scoring a touchdown with the player you wagered on scoring.

Longest completion

Consider the types of quarterbacks playing in the game, the style of play and any ancillary information when making this bet.

For example, Patrick Mahomes is more of a passer than Jalen Hurts. Also, Mahomes is dealing with ankle injury so he will likely not run for a score.

With Mahomes even more pass dependent than usual, and Philadelphia boasting a strong run defense, an O/U of a 37.5 yard pass could be a good play.

Longest reception

Longest reception is about analyzing who is the long distance playmaker for your team, and if they can break away for a big score against the defense. In the big game, A.J. Brown is the leading Eagle for longest reception with an O/U of a 26.5 yard pass while Travis Kelce leads the Chiefs with a line of 22.5 yards.

Super Bowl MVP

The Super Bowl MVP award almost always goes to a member of the winning team. Due to a quarterback’s role in the outcome of a game, the Super Bowl MVP award often goes to the quarterback unless a defensive player or role player has the game of their career.

Currently, Super Bowl MVP odds are split for Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts at +135. After that, there is a stark drop off where Travis Kelce is the next best odds at +1,200.

Game props

Opening kickoff to be a touchback

A self-explanatory prop bet ― will the returner actually attempt a return or will they let the ball go into the end zone for a touchback? In today’s NFL, a touchback is usually a likely scenario as this bet is -172 favored to be a touchback.

Result of first scoring play

The first scoring play is tricky because this could be from a field goal, a touchdown or even a safety. Many NFL games start out slow as both the teams work to expose a weakness in the other, so a field goal has good value here.

Race to points

This prop bet entails which team will reach a certain number of points first such as the 10 point mark, the 20 point mark or even more. Be sure to research which team starts games quickly to make a proper wager.

Which team will punt first?

In the Super Bowl, you can expect both teams to punt. This is a split wager and is close to 50/50 odds for who punts first.

Which team will score first?

This is closely tied to who wins the coin toss and gets the ball first. However, not every team will be able to score on their first possession.

This wager is another prop bet close to 50/50 odds because it is tied to other probabilities.

Exotic props

National anthem

We start our exotic Super Bowl props list with the national anthem. In big games, the NFL generally brings in popular performers such as Chris Stapleton this year.

The popular performer almost always adds their extra flair to the national anthem which is why the line is on how many seconds the anthem will last. Generally, the trend is that the national anthem goes over the projected time.

Win coin toss

Yes, markets do have team props available such as what team will win the coin toss. Not only can you pick the winner of the coin toss, but you can wager on the result of the coin toss whether it will be heads or tails.

Halftime show

After placing a wager on the coin toss, you can even bet how many songs will be in the halftime show. This really depends on the performer and how many hits they have.

This year, Rihanna will be performing at the Super Bowl. She has many hits ― will she go over or under the projected 9.5 songs?

Gatorade bath

The winning coach of any big game, let alone the Super Bowl, usually gets a Gatorade bath courtesy of the players on the team. It has become one of the most popular Super Bowl props betting the color of the Gatorade.

Whether it’s orange, yellow, red, blue or any other color, you can be sure there will be Gatorade poured on the winning coach.

Super Bowl prop bets FAQs

What types of Super Bowl prop bets are available?

Generally, the different types of props are player props, team props, game props and exotic props. Player props are how one player is expected to perform, team props focus on team statistics, game props focus on outcomes such as special teams or what the first scoring play will be and exotic props cover things outside of the game such as coin toss, national anthem or Gatorade color.

How can I bet on the Super Bowl?

There are many different sportsbooks available and ways to wager on the big game. Whether you are planning on wagering on the Kansas City Chiefs or the Philadelphia Eagles there are endless options.

Are prop bets worth the risk?

The risk is unique to the bettor. For some, prop bets are worth the risk because of the high potential payout.

Every bettor should assess how much they are willing to lose and never bet more than they can afford. Prop bets are great for high payout; however, consider hedging with wagers such as moneyline, spread or O/U in order to maximize payout and minimize potential losses.

When is the big game?

The Super Bowl will take place Feb. 12th at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. This year, the Kansas City Chiefs will take on the Philadelphia Eagles.
